photograph consciously !

We rush through everyday life and increasingly forget how to stand still. In the chapter “Why Photography” I already spoke about taking photographs “consciously”. But there is a lot more to it than what I thought my parents kept saying to me when I was at school. “Concentrate and don’t get distracted.” It was only through the camera of this magnitude that I realized how right they were and what was really behind it. This aspect was and still is a reason why I pick up the camera and set off. If you actually take photos consciously, you will have to take time for situations that would normally have passed you by. You will immerse yourself in stories that would otherwise never have existed. Get to know the people behind your photographs and, last but not least, get to know your tools better.
By the sweat of your brow
Photography should be strenuous. If you start out into the alleys of Cuba and know what you're going to do and have walked many of these alleys five or ten times, it should feel a little like work. Consciously wandering the streets of London or the mountains with a camera and an idea of results should feel much more arduous than a tourist stroll or a leisurely hike.
But visiting certain places repeatedly opens up new perspectives. You will also be perceived differently. In the foreword I talked about ideas arising from experiences and information. This also applies to conscious photography. By actively engaging with something, you can gather significantly more information in a short period of time. You experience the people or the environment more intensively and this can lead to ideas for image compositions or short acquaintances. Both can result in interesting shots.
Concentrate on what you are doing and don't just snap at what happens to come into view. The random cannot be the basis for your own style. Because millions of these images are being created at this moment in all the cameras in the world. Only if you take photographs with your personal approach, which you can only achieve through awareness and concentration, will situations and photographs arise that only you could have taken.
